EAST CORK ATHLETICS DIVISION WOMEN ARE NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS & MEN JUST MISS OUT ON BRONZE
The Athletics Ireland National League Championships were held in Tullamore Co. Offaly on Sunday 13th August. This was the final Senior Track & Field Championships of the season. In the competition teams must compete over 21 athletic events across track & field.
The East Cork Athletics Division had both Men’s and Women’s teams competing in the County Team Category. The Divisional Clubs have been invested in developing teams for both men and women to compete nationally and provide a pathway for junior athletes to transition into senior competition for nearly a decade. This work bore fruit on Sunday when the women’s team not only clinched a medal but dramatically won the division, finishing on 109 points, a mere three points ahead of a fancied Co. Tipperary team, who convincingly won the preliminary qualifying round last June. Co. Galway who were also one of the pre event favourites finished a close 3rd with 102 points.

The Men’s team performed brilliantly and finished in 3rd place on total points scored. In this competition you only keep points from your best 15 events out of 21 and when the final calculations were done the team placed 4th overall. Bittersweet for the lads who were obviously excited for their training partners and friends on the girls team but gutted to be so close but off the podium. Hopefully the experience will encourage them to keep going in heir training and rise again to the challenge next year.
